For overweight individuals, snoring or feeling unrested upon waking could be signs of sleep apnea, a condition common in obese individuals that can affect health in various ways. Even if you're not ready for a formal sleep test, you can start monitoring your sleep at home with a smartwatch like the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, or other brands with sleep tracking features. Collect data and consider a more detailed examination once you're certain of the problem.

If you're not ready for a serious sleep test yet, you can start taking care of yourself at home using readily available technology. Apple WatchYou can use a Samsung Galaxy Watch or various smartband models. These watches have basic sleep tracking features, such as recording sleep duration, measuring heart rate during sleep, measuring blood oxygen (SpO2) during sleep, and some models can even assess snoring or provide sleep advice. The advantage is that it makes it easier to monitor trends in sleep quality, such as checking if you wake up frequently during the night, if you're getting enough sleep, or if you have low blood oxygen levels at night.
However, smartwatches cannot accurately detect or diagnose sleep apnea as effectively as a real sleep test. If you experience suspicious symptoms such as loud snoring, easy fatigue, daytime sleepiness, waking up feeling unrested, or frequent warnings from your watch, even if some readings appear normal, you should consult a doctor and consider a sleep test for reassurance and appropriate treatment planning. Smartwatches are a good initial monitoring tool but cannot replace medical equipment. If you have any questions about the information displayed on your watch, you can always discuss the results with your doctor.
