What are non-communicable diseases (NCDs)? How do they differ from other diseases?
NCDs, or non-communicable diseases, are also known as "chronic non-communicable diseases". To put it simply, it's related to our lifestyle habits. If you get it, you need long-term care; it won't go away in a day or two. It's a group of diseases not caused by pathogens like viruses or bacteria, and cannot be transmitted from one person to another like the common cold or tuberculosis.
Common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) include:Diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or chronic kidney disease. This usually develops gradually as a result of our behaviors, such as consuming too much sugary, fatty, or salty food, lack of exercise, being overweight, smoking, or drinking alcohol.
Unlike infectious diseases that can be prevented with vaccines or by staying away from sick people, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) can be prevented or delayed through holistic health care, such as improving diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and having regular health checkups.
