Body weight and back pain.
This is something I see very often in the clinic: "How does being overweight affect back pain and spinal stenosis?" Many people may not realize just how much this problem affects their daily lives.
Why does being overweight cause back pain?
When a patient is overweight, the spine and back muscles have to bear more weight. Increased pressure on the spinal joints. This can make you more prone to back pain.
a sample Think about how your back muscles get tired and sore after carrying a heavy bag for a long time. Being overweight is like having your body constantly carrying that extra weight, ultimately leading to back pain.
Back muscles weaken due to being overweight.
Did you know that...? Being overweight weakens the back muscles. And the abdominal muscles weaken as well, affecting... Body balance and equilibrium Directly, it makes you tired after walking for a short time and more prone to back pain.
a sample Some patients consult me saying they experience back pain when standing for long periods. I usually find that this is partly due to weak abdominal and back muscles combined with being overweight.
Intervertebral discs degenerate faster due to body weight.
Another major problem is... Intervertebral disc degeneration accelerates and increases the risk of nerve compression. Especially when you are overweight, it can cause the intervertebral discs to wear down faster or shift, compressing the nerves and causing numbness or radiating pain down the leg.
a sample Overweight patients often present with back pain, radiating pain down the legs, or numbness in the legs. These symptoms are usually caused by a slipped or degenerated spinal disc.
Back pain due to obesity VS Back pain from lifting heavy objects
The difference between back pain from being "overweight" and "back pain from lifting heavy objects." They are similar in that they result from pressure and overuse of the muscles or bones of the spine. However, the causes and patterns encountered are different.
- Back pain from being overweight (like being obese).
This condition arises from the back having to bear excessive weight during all activities, leading to wear and tear on the spinal structures, weakened back and abdominal muscles, and chronic compression of bones and intervertebral discs. This results in chronic back pain that often worsens over time. - Back pain from lifting heavy objects.
This often occurs suddenly from lifting objects incorrectly or carrying excessively heavy items, causing immediate back muscle tears or disc herniation. Pain may be localized or radiate down the leg. Symptoms usually improve on their own with rest or symptomatic treatment.
Advice from the doctor.
- Check and adjust your eating habits.
- Increase physical activity in your daily life.
- Get enough rest and manage stress.
- Get a health checkup, including hormone levels and any underlying medical conditions.
- Create realistic goals.
Being overweight doesn't just cause back pain, patients. Many people initially present with back pain, numbness in the hands and feet, or muscle aches, but the truth is... Being overweight is also a warning sign of many other health problems. For example, diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipid levels, or heart disease, collectively known as NCDs (non-communicable diseases), often develop gradually without the body giving clear warning signs like back pain. The overweight you are, the higher the risk of developing these diseases.
Therefore, doctors advise patients to view weight management not just as a way to reduce back pain, but as a way to take action. Preventing chronic diseases (NCDs) early leads to good long-term health. Starting with small lifestyle changes, such as choosing healthier foods, reducing sweets, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest, can help reduce both back pain and the risk of developing other health problems. Take care of yourself today for better health in the future.
