What is saline solution and what are its properties?
First, let's understand saline solution. The saline solution patients see in pharmacies (Normal Saline Solution, NSS) is 0.9% sodium chloride (salt) mixed in clean, sterile distilled water. Its concentration is similar to that of our body fluids.
The key characteristic of saline solution is:
- Please help with the cleaning: It can be used to effectively wipe away dirt, excess oil, or dust from the skin.
- Non-irritating: Because it is balanced with body fluids, it is very gentle, making it suitable for cleaning wounds or wiping delicate areas.
- Provides a comfortable feeling on the skin: After wiping, the skin feels clean, not dry or tight.
And what about saline solution and "acne treatment"?
This is the key point. Saline solution does not contain any active ingredients that directly treat acne.
- Does not help dissolve clogged pores: It does not have the same properties as topical vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) that help exfoliate skin cells and bring clogged pores to the surface.
- Does not help kill acne bacteria (C. acne): It does not have the direct antibacterial effect of benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics.
- Does not help reduce inflammation: It cannot reduce the inflammation of swollen, red pimples.
But why do some people report improved acne after using it?
That's because saline solution is used for cleaning. It's a good extra step, especially after squeezing pimples. Or for people with very irritated skin.
- Case 1: Use after squeezing pimples: After squeezing a pimple, a small open wound is created. Using saline solution to clean the wound gently washes away blood, pus, and dirt, keeping the wound clean and reducing the risk of secondary infection. This promotes faster healing.
- Case 2: Irritated or sensitive skin: For some people who are allergic to facial cleansers or have very sensitive skin, using saline solution to cleanse the face "instead" of using harsh soaps or foams is recommended. It's temporary. This will help reduce irritation and allow the skin's protective barrier to recover. As the skin becomes stronger, acne caused by irritation (not hormonal acne or clogged pores) may improve.
Precautions when using saline solution.
- Cannot be used as a substitute for cleanser: Saline solution may not completely remove waterproof makeup or sunscreen. Using it as a cleanser might lead to more buildup and clogged pores.
- May cause skin dryness: Although gentle, frequent use of saline solution may further draw moisture away from the skin in patients with already dry skin, making the skin even drier.
- Product cleanliness: Make sure the saline solution you use is sterile, and that the cotton swabs are very clean.
